Mfg. porous ceramic prods., esp. lightweight refractory bricks - from mixt. of clay and naphthalene which is melted out of the bricks and reclaimed, and where bricks have very low thermal conductivity
A dry mixt. is made contg. raw ceramic materials, and milled naphthalene with a grain size below 1mm; then, a mixt. of water and naphthalene particles, pref. naphthalene sublimate with a particle size of ca. 0.01mm, is added to the dry mixt. The resulting mixt. is compacted or moulded; and the mouldings are heated so the naphthalene is driven out and reclaimed. The mouldings are then baked. The mixt. of water and fine naphthalene particles pref. also contains a liquefier and a fine clay forming a film on the naphthalene particles. As compared with similar, commercially-available bricks, these have a higher cold compression strength, and a significantly lower thermal conductivity.
