The mechanism holds the head of a cow in a feeding position using a stirrup with hinged arms, open at the top. The arm upper ends are mounted on holding members movable towards and away from each other. The upper ends of the stirrup arms are mounted on further arms hinged to the members on vertical axes running between the stirrup arms. These members are moved in opposite directions along a rail by thrust rods. A follower (70) on one of the thrust rods (44) for its respective holding member (24) has a hook (72) fitting round the member. The hook can be lifted by the member when this is slid towards the follower, dropping round it by gravity on impact.
