In each cycle of a multistage process for the prodn. of N,N,N',N'-tetraacetyl-ethylene-diamine (I), N,N'-diacetyl- ethylene-diamine (II) is reacted with acetic anhydride (III), (pt. of) which is recovered from another cycle, giving a reaction mixt. of (I) and (III). Acetic acid (IIIA) is distilled from this and the distn. residue is worked up to pure (I). One or more of the following stages is employed: (1) (III) is added to the reaction mixt. before distn. of (IIIA) is complete; (2) In each cycle, the (II):(III)molar ratio in this stage is min. 1:6; (3)The total vol. (per. vol. unit of reaction mixt. in this stage) of distillate distilled from the reaction mixt. in one cycle is greater than the total vol. distilled off in a preceding cycle; (4)Working up of the distn. residue involves recrystallisation of (I) from (III) and recirculation of the recrystallisation liquid to the reaction with (II). (I) is useful in detergents etc., as perborate activator. The yield w.r.t. ethylene diamine (IV) and the utilisation of (III) are improved greately without impairing the purity of (I).
