The device uses a number of force sensors (36) between the feed device (28) for the tool carrier (20,26) and the tool carrier (20,26) itself. The force sensors (36) are used to attach the tool carrier (20,26) to the feed device (28) and each supplies three force components. Three or six force sensors (36) are evenly spaced in a ring between the facing surfaces of the feed device (28) and the tool carrier (20,26). Each comprises a piezoelectric quartz ring (36) through which a screw bolt (30) with a centring sleeve (34) is fitted. The device allows effective monitoring of the wear of the various cutting tools carried by a multiple tool carrier.
