The magazine (1) of the semi-automatic rifle is arranged underneath the barrel (3) at the barrel end on the same side as the breech in order to reduce the overall length, whilst at the same time ensuring a constant barrel length. The cartridge (4) is grasped in the magazine (1) by pull-out claws (18) coupled to the breech (2) and is moved along a guide path (5) ascending in a curve, and is finally transferred into the loading position. For this, a pivoting lever (7) movable about a fixed axis (8) is arranged in the end region (6) of the guide path (5), and formed on the breech (2) is a control element (19) which actuates the pivoting lever over the final portion of the breech recoil. This pivoting lever lifts the cartridge (4) supplied from the magazine (1) into the barrel axis (21) and at the same time pushes it into holding claws (20) on the end face (22) of the breech (2) located on the barrel side.
