Unicellular algae are grown while simultaneously biodegradable waste material contg. aerobic bacteria is purified. The waste is first comminuted and most of the particulate matter is removed so that it is largely free of turbidity. An aq. mixt. of the algae and waste material is prepd. the waste providing nitrogen and phosphorous nutrients for the algae. The mixt. is agitated and aerated with a mixt. of CO2, and air in an amount that balance the bacterial growth with the algal growth. The mixt. is circulated so that it is exposed in each cycle for 1/2 to 2 seconds to light to induce photosynthesis, and then is subjected to a longer period of darkness. A separate algae prod. and purified water are recovered, some of the algae being recirculated. Used for purifying polluted water such as sewage or cannery wastes while simultaneously producing an algal mass which is high in protein.
