A method of switching provides that during the transmission by the calling party of the signals of the called number to a communication station additonal signals related to the type of transmitted information are simultaneously sent to that station and after the receipt of the signals of the called number the type of transmitted information is analyzed as a result of which its character is determined. The switching centre is provided with unit (12) for determining the type of transmitted information connected to an automatic long-range communication telephone station (1) and to an electronic computer (10). In case of a channel being occupied during the data transmission from the computer (10) a holding is effected with subsequent switching the channels, whereas in case of a channel being free the direct switching is effected.
