The air heater is integrated into the fire bars by forming the latter from interconnected tubes. The side tubes (13a,b) are connected across the back of the hearth by a cross tube (18). The ends of the tubes are connected into the hollow fire dogs (16a,b). Air is supplied to one fire-dog by a fan (20) whilst the other fire-dog is connected to an outlet pipe (17b). Air is heated during its passage through the tubes. A small tube (23) is provided, together with a valve, to provide additional air to the hearth when lighting the fire.
