The connector has two centering sleeves which comprises two female truncated cone sections having their small dia. end faces face to face. A male section of complementary shape is positioned within each of the sleeves. The male sections have an axial channel, receiving the optical fibres, such that they may be connected in the plane of the small dia. ends of the sleeves. Each of the sleeves is axially displaceable in a tubular base, within which is located a spring which urges the faces of the two sleeves apart. The spring allows axial movement of the block constituted by the two sleeves and their male portions, during connection. Clips extend radially towards the centre of the body of the connector, and form abutments which limit the displacement of the centering sleeves within the base, and under the action of the spring.
