A foam mattress has a core layer with holes distributed into zones of differing foam/hole area ratios. The variation is used to vary the compressive stiffness of the mattress, e.g. to provide extra local deformation to accommodate the head, shoulders and hips of person lying on the mattress. The foam/hole area variations may be due to variations in hole size or spacing for the former. Holes of an intermediate size may be used to smooth the transition between zones with small holes and zones with large holes. Each zone may extend right across the mattress or be more localised. Specifically claimed are mattresses with a core layer of latex foam having cylindrical holes open to one face, the latex core being covered on one or both faces with a relatively thin layer of polyether foam.
