Self stabilising current generator for discharge tube - has wave shaper, connected to rectifying circuit, whose frequency increases when current exceeds reference threshold value
The discharge tube is supplied by a rectified supply through a transformer. The onset of an arc discharge causes a sharp increase in current which is detected in the primary of the transformer. Two corrective measures are initiated by the control logic. Firstly, the frequency of operation of the thyristor bridge inverter circuit supplying the transformer is increased, so increasing the source impedance constituted by an inductor in series between inverter output and transformer primary. Secondly, the power supplied to the inverter is reduced by increasing the delay angle of the three phase thyristor bridge rectifier supplying the inverter through a filter.
