The invention relates to a method for controlling the corrosion of iron and steel surfaces in aqueous systems. According to the invention, an effective amount of from 0.1 to 500 ppm of water is maintained in the system of a corrosion inhibitor complex formed by the reaction of aluminum hexahydrate chloride and gluconic acid, at a molar ratio of 1: 2 to 2: 1, this complex being the only corrosion control additive present.
