The outflow of a large (1.5m dia.) conical crusher is regulated by variation of the distance between the conical crushing head (1) and the conical seat it works against (5), which may be raised or lowered on a screw thread cut in the frame (4) of the machine. The crushing head (1) is operated by a driven rod (8) terminated in a ball joint set into the head carrier (9) which carries an eccentrically mounted mass (7) free to rotate about the tubular support (6) for the crushing head (1) causing the head to rotate round the conical seat (5). The discharge space for the crushed material is measured by the angle gamma by which the head deviates from the vertical, using permanent magnets (18) fixed round the periphery of the head and coils (16) fixed to the frame of the machine round the circle traversed by the head carrier. An electronic circuit measures the difference in the induced pick-up coil (16) voltages and from this gives a signal proportional to the eccentricity of the head carrier motion, and thus to the available discharge space. This signal can drive a motor to position the cone seat (5).
