The liquor from alkaline leaching of uranium minerals is processed by (a) neutralising at least a portion of the liquor by acid addn. to remove carbonates and then recombining the liquor with any untreated liquor; (b) adding lime to ppte. uranium; and (c) sepg. the ppte. (a calcium-contg. pre-concentrate) from the supernatant soln. The neutralisation step prevents uranium remaining in soln. as a complex carbonate in step (b), reduces the amt. of lime consumed by reaction with carbonates and pptn. of calcium carbonate, and reduces the amt. of calcium carbonate in the ppte. so that its uranium concn. is increased. When the liquor has a high content of organic material, pptn. of this material can be avoided by pH control by only neutralising a certain portion of the liquor.
