Rare earth metals are sepd. from each other by solvent extn. by contacting a rare earth metals-contg. aq. soln. with a water-immiscible organic solvent, e.g. kerosene, etc., contg. as an extracting agent 2-ethylhexylphosphonic mono-2-ethylhexyl ester to extract =1 rare earth metal from the aq. phase due to the formation of a water-insol. and organic phase-soluble complex salt between the rare earth metal(s) and the extracting agent, and subsequently contacting the organic phase with an aq. inorganic acid-contg. phase to transfer by back-extn. the rare earth metal(s) to the aq. phase. The H+ concn. of the aq. phase is kept under lower value in the extn. procedure, and kept under higher value in the back-extraction. procedure, thereby the amt. of the inorganic acid, e.g. HCl, necessitated for the back-extn. is lowered in a large extent. Process is applied for the sepn. of the rare earth metals from other difficult-extractable metals.
