Fixative used in dyeing textiles contg. natural and synthetic polyamides with anionic dyestuffs, is a quat. ammonium salt (I) of the formula (RCH2-N(+)R1R2-CH2-CH(OH)-CH2Cl) X(-) (in which R is 5 or 6 C cycloalkyl or a phenyl or naphthyl gp. with 0-3 1-4 C-alkyl, 0 1 or 2 Cl and/or 0, 1 or 2 Br substit(s). and a total of max. 3 substits. R1 and R2 are 1-4C alkyl. X(-) is an anion). Treatment is carried out in weakly acid to weakly alkaline medium. (I) is useful in dyeing wool, silk and esp. synthetic poly- amides, opt. mixed with other fibres, e.g. polyesters. It improves the fastness, esp. wet fastness, of the dyeing obtd. with anionic dyestuffs and also with 1:1 and 1:2 metal complex dyestuffs (with or without sulpho gps.).
