The wheelchair designed for maximum manoeuvrability, particularly for negotiating spaces between furniture in an office, has two wheels (30,31) with tyres (30a,31a) forming the drive wheels for manual operation. The seat is also supported by four castor wheels (25) attached to brackets (22) allowing them to swing about a vertical axis (23) as well as rotate about a horizontal axis. The castor wheels are mounted at the four ends of a cross shaped frame (20) with a pillar (11) projecting upwards from its centre carrying an extension (12) which supports the seat. The cross member (30) carrying the two main wheels is attached to this pillar. When weight is applied to the seat, the tyres are compressed to the level of the castor wheels.
