The fire tube boiler is cylindrical. The firing end of each flame tube (2) is extended to form a cylindrical or conical precombustion chamber, projecting beyond the smoke box/boxes (5). This chamber (8) double-cased for boiler- or feedwater cooling, is releasably mounted, pref. using studs and nuts. The boiler has an ancillary-heating-surface block (11) alongside, above and/or underneath, of about the same length as the boiler. This is so dimensioned that, with the firing rate increased to a max., flue gas temp. lies below 180 deg. C.
