The gypsum is esp. moist industrial gypsum contg. 5-20% free moisture; and the furnace consists of a drum with an axial inlet for the material to be roasted. Inside the drum is at least two circular rows of tubes which are concentric, and extend along the entire length of the drum to a ring chamber. The hot gases from a burner flow along the tubes into a chamber, and then back along the tubes into a chamber, in which they are mixed with fresh hot gases from the burner. The tubes pref. have excellent diameters, and the raw gypsum is pref. fed by an axial screw feeder to inlet. A simple plant in which moist gypsum can be roasted, so a prior drying operation can be eliminated.
