The glass has a thermal stress factor (TSF) of 0.2-0.5 N/sq.mm/ deg.K; and is heated to above its relaxation temp. but below its softening temp. The hot glass is then quenched using a spraying nozzle providing a mixt. of liq. and air. The nozzle is fed with 0.1-5 litres/ h liq., and 0.1-10 cu.m/h air, the ratio liq.:air being 0.1-5 litres/cu.m air. The pref. liq. is water, or a mixt. of water and an organic solvent which readily evaporates. The drops of the sprayed liq. pref. have a dia. of 1-100 microns. The glass pref. has a softening point of max. 800 deg.C and is located at 30-200 mm from the nozzle. When several nozzles are used, they are pref. 30-60 mm apart from each other. Process gives min. bending strength for the glass of 120 N/sq.mm after the glass has been wet abraded with abrasive grains of size 220.
