The tube (11) consists of ZrO2 which conducts oxygen ions, and has an enclosed end (17) with an electrode (12) on the inside, and an electrode (13) on the outside of end (17). Inside tube (11) is a tube (15) providing a reference gas; and tube (11) is located in an outer tube (14) with holes (21) through which the gas being analysed flows. The gap between the bottom end of tube (15) and end (17) of tube (11) is chosen to obtain desired speeds for both the gas being analysed and the reference gas, up tube (14) towards an outlet (31). Electrode (12) is pref. a metal coating on end (17) and used as the welded joint of a thermo- couple. Used for example, for process control during the heat treatment of steel.
