Ear muffs which protect the ears from excessive noise have the disadvantage that they produce a sensation of isolation. In some active systems a compensating sound is produced which, however, suffers from resonance effects. This device introduces an almost continuous note in the earmuffs which is independent from the external noise. A microphone (3) in the space between the muffs and the ear picks up some external noise and the compensating note emitted by a small sound reproducer (2) included in the same space. The total sound level is regulated by a small battery driven amplifier (4) in the muffs which may be preset to any tolerable sound level. The system thus is independent of phase shifts and resonance effects.
