A B S T R A C TA time assignment speech interpolation systemincludes a variable length speech buffer for temporarilystoring sampled signals until a transmission facility becomesavailable. Signals on input speech channels are converted intodigital samples. If a transmission facility is available, thedigital samples are reconstituted into analog signals which aretransmitted over the facility. If no facility is available,digital samples are stored in a digital memory for a variablelength of time until a transmission facility becomes available.Digital samples are retrieved from the memory in chronologicalorder of their time of arrival at the memory. The variablelength memory accommodates a short term overload of inputsignals to provide flexible buffering. Means are provided forbypassing the sampled signals from a particular input channelaround the buffer whenever both a facility is available and nosampled signals from that channel are stored in the buffer.
