ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA control apparatus for antisurge protection of a dynamiccompressor including a junction of a closed antisurge loop with asurge limit computing module and a two-mode controller with a relaybackup system with deviation alarms provided herein. In its opera-tion during a slow disturbance, the two mode controller providesmodulated antisurge protection by opening a relief valve, if theoperating point of the compressor crosses the surge control line.During a dangerously fast disturbance, the relay backup systemprovides antisurge protection if a preestablished deviation of theoperating point from the surge control line appears. A relay backupsystem opens the relief valve very quickly. When the relief valveis so opened, the process of the user of fluid from the compressoris compensated by increasing the performance of the compressor tomaintain pressure or flow rate. Then the relay system closes therelief valve with a relatively slow speed, which prevents a danger-ous deviation of the operating point from the surge control line.In time, the surge limit line may change so that the surge controlline is no longer correctly placed. If under such circumstancessurge appears, then the backup relay system opens the relief valvevery fast, closes it with a relatively slow speed and changes theposition of surge control line. A much higher reliability of con-trol of the compressor is thus achieved when operating close to thesurge control line. This permits an expansion of the safe operatingzone of the dynamic compressor and also increases the safety ofoperation of the process using the compressed gas.
