Abstract of the Disclosure:A process is, herein, disclosed for removing tritiumfrom tritium-containing heavy water to recover tritium gasof high purity characterized by feeding a part of the heavywater containing tritium from a source for supplying theheavy water such as heavy water moderated power reactor toan exchange reaction column wherein the heavy water contactswith deuterium gas countercurrently, extracting heavy waterenriched in tritium from the bottom of the exchange reactioncolumn and converting it to vapor of heavy water, passingthe vapor of heavy water through at least one packed columnof two columns packed with easily oxidizable or reduciblemetals by steam or hydrogen respectively wherein the metalin the column is oxidized to metal oxide while the vaporof heavy water is reduced to deuterium gas, recycling mostof the deuterium gas to the exchange reaction column toeffect countercurrent contact between heavy water anddeuterium gas, extracting the deuterium gas of reduced tri-tium content from the top of the exchange reaction column,passing said deuterium gas through the other column in whichthe metal packed has already been oxidized to metal oxidewherein the metal oxide is reduced to metal while thedeuterium gas is oxidized to heavy water and recycling apart of the heavy water of reduced tritium content to theheavy water supplying source while recycling the residualheavy water to the top of the exchange reaction column,introducing a part of the gas obtained after passing thevapor of heavy water through the heated metal layer to thethermal diffusion column cascade and concentrating thetritium to recover the tritium as tritium gas of high purity.- 1 -
