The device for closing a leak in a water pipe or a hydraulic line to a machine operator with a blocking device inside an adaptor fitted into the pipe. The adaptor is a tube with a chamber with a seating for a ball acting as a stop valve, normally out of contact with the seat. Connected to the ball is a wire (16) which passes through a seal embedded in the side of the adaptor. The other end of the wire is connected to a humidity sensitive device which tensions the wire when dampness occurs due to a leak, and pulls the ball against the seating, blocking the pipe. The operating device has a tube (67) carrying end caps (60,61) through which the wire passes. A helical spring (63) fitted over the caps and around the tube, is compressed by a ring (69') and enclosed by a paper sleeve (66). When the sleeve is affected by damp, the paper sleeve allows the spring to extend and the wire is pulled, operating the valve member.
