The gas burner assembly is arranged within a space (24) in which air or another gaseous medium flows (25) and comprises a burner body (46) with orifices (52) into a combustion chamber (29) leading into the space. The chamber (29) is contained between diverging flame stabiliser plates (53) with openings (63) and the entire assembly is contained in a duct (31). Upstream of the plates (53) the duct contains, in succession, an air chamber (26) connecting, via openings (34) in a partition (33), to a mixing chamber (27) receiving gas (37,41), and then, via openings (45) in partition (42), to a mixture chamber (28) around the plates (53). This mixture with high air excess enters the chamber (29) via the openings (63) and produces the main combustion, whilst the body (46) acts as auxiliary burner (not pilot flame) to sustain combustion.
