On leaving the mould, the two narrow sides or edges of the cast slab are each supported by a plate, which is hinged onto one narrow mould wall. A pair of housings contg. bevel gears rotated by a handle is pref. used to drive threaded spindles so the movement of a wall and the adjacent plate is synchronised. The lower spindles attached to the two plates are pref. fitted with nuts and lock nuts so the angle of each plate can be adjusted w.r.t. the vertical. Optimum guidance of the semisolid slab into the support formed by plates which constitute the inlet to the guide and support track, along which the slab travels during complete solidification.
