The continuous drier is for grain or similar free-flowing material, which flows under gravity through a series of treatment zones in succession at variable speed, these zones comprising two drying and one cooling one at least. In these a gaseous drying or cooling agent at a predetermined temp. is directed onto it. Part at least of the agent leaving a drying zone, and of that leaving the cooling zone, are recirculated and delivered to the drying zones after reheating. After leaving the first drying zone, the material travels, solely under gravity, in the same direction for a period during which the minimum amount, or none at all, of the drying agent is directed onto it. It then passes to the second drying zone.
