A furnace is used to melt the ore or other raw material and form a heterogeneous melt contg. a sulphide- and oxide- phase under a molten slag. Pneumatic mixing and oxidn. of the melt is achieved by injecting a gas (1) contg. min. 35% O2 into the melt at a rate of 200-2000 Nm3/hour and per m2 of the horizontal cross-section of the bath. The result is the formation of an upper layer (3) which is pneumatically mixed; and a lower, quiet layer formed by slag (4) above a layer of matte (5) or crude metal (34); each prod. is tapped separately from the furnace. Natural gas is pref. blown into layer (3) as a fuel or instead of natural gas, liq. fuel, coal dust, or lumps of coal or coke may be used. Useful for the winning of Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn from ores, concentrates etc.
