An installation for drying powdered materials comprises a drying chamber provided with a drum with paddles forming cells. Below the drum is a gas distribution grid through which passes a heat transfer agent for the formation of a fluidised bed of the material to be dried which is afterwards cooled. A gas distribution grid is mounted in the drying chamber above the drum. The grid is capable of vibration in a vertical plane and is inclined slightly from the zone where the material to be dried is charged to the zone where the material is discharged into the cells of the drum. The part of the chamber above the vibrating grid serves as the drying section. The part below this grid serves as the final drying section. The presence of a gas distributing grid above the drum carrying out vibratory movements prevents balling up of the powdered material during the first stage of drying and ensures max. utilisation of the heat supplied by the heat transfer gas. This results in a redn. in consumption of the drying agent.
