The method of making small diameter tunnels uses prefabricated segments which can be inserted in sets of three, each three forming a complete circle. These are installed by using an advancing shield. This has a set of radial telescopic rams which are used to position the segments. The joints between the edges of the ring segments are filled with mortar. The space behind each ring can then be filled with concrete to make a strong wall. The circular advancing shield used has a visor at the front and the inside is protected by an anti-explosion screen. It also carries installation devices.
