The SO2 and H2S contents of waste gas streams are measured by (a) taking a representative gas sample, (b) mixing with a constant amount of air sufficient for complete oxidn. of all H2S present, (c) measuring the SO2 content (A) by interference spectrometry, (d) passing over a selective oxidn. catalyst at 200-400 degrees C, (e) measuring the SO2 content (B) as in (c) and (f) deducting (A) from (B) to obtain the original H2S content. Used for measurement and control of compsn. of gas for the Claus sulphur-recovery process to achieve the optimum H2S/SO2 molar ratio of 2. Very rapid results are obtd., which can be used for automatic control of the gas compsn., without the base line drift caused by S deposits in cells for the UV absorption method of measurement, or the delay of around 3 mins. in the gas chromatography method.
