1384879 Tyre fitting and removal DUNLOP Ltd 4 May 1972 [12 May 1971] 14606/71 Heading B7C Apparatus for tyre fitting and removal comprises a plate 15 for supporting a wheel and rotatable about a vertical axis by a reversal motor via worm and wheel gearing 10, 9 and a shaft 2, there being coaxial with plate 15 a lower plate 21 rotatable about shaft housing 5 on a phosphor-bronze sleeve 23, wheel gripping means comprising three circumferentially-spaced arms 25 being pivotable at their inner ends about lugs 26 with respect to plate 15 and pivotally and slidably mounted on lugs 24 intermediate their ends for movement with respect to plate 21, brake means in the form of pads 30 applying a continual radial force to an annular collar 22 of plate 21 such that rotation of the plate 15 will cause the arms to move either inwards or outwards according to the direction of rotation, but if the arms grip a wheel rim during inward movement the two plates will then rotate together the braking force being overcome. The pads 30 are loaded by a helical spring 40 and may be readily replaced by removing threaded plug 37 and withdrawing slidable plug 41. The arms carry claws 27 to grip the wheel rim. In a modification, Fig. 2, the driven plate 47 is beneath the other plate 46 and the brake means 49 act upon the internal surface of an annular collar 48 of the plate 46.
