Steel leaving a hot rolling mill at above the A3 point is subjected to multistage intermittent quenching so transformation to martensite occurs in layers; and a specific temp. equalisation time is used after each quenching period so the core of the steel and the martensite layer reach the same temp. Equalisation temp. for the outermost layer of martensite is pref. below A3; and quenching is pref. discontinued at equalisation temps. above Ms, esp. at 450-650 degrees C. Esp. used in treatment of hot rolled steel rod intended for reinforcing concrete, so the dynamic load carrying capacity of the rod is increased.
