The stresses are provided in the surface zone of the balls, and are created by allowing the balls to roll down the sloping surface of a hard, flat plate. Above plate is an impact plate, which is parallel to plate, and which is vibrated at high frequency to impose repeated hammer blows on the balls, thus creating the desired compressive stress. The pref. machine uses a plate suspended by a spring-loaded guide fitted on each corner of the plate; and two driven shafts fitted with eccentrics control the vertical amplitude of vibration of plate. Plate carries baffles so the balls cannot roll in a straight line down this plate.
