Measurement method for leakage current of electrolytic capacitor - charges capacitor in short time period, integrates current over subsequent period from 500 to 1000 m.s. and then disconnects voltage source
An electrolytic capacitor can be charged in a short time by a constant current until it reaches a specified potential and is then held at that potential by a voltage source. The leakage current can then be measured after a very short time by integrating the current over a specified time. The method is much faster than previous techniques and can easily be automated. A typical measurement cycle would be to charge the capacitor in 300 ms or less and to integrate the current between 500 and 1000 ms. The voltage source can then be disconnected and the discharge time constant measured between 2000 and 2500 ms before forceably discharging the capacitor by 3000 ms.
