The iron is heated for 1/4.-5 hr., esp. for 15-40 mins. at min. 730 degrees C, esp. at 730-920 degrees C; and is then cooled in less than 20 mins. to max. 600 degrees C, esp. to 300-600 degrees C in a heated bath. In the case of nodular cast iron, the pref. treatment consists of allowing the casting to solidify and then taking it out of the mould at 730-920 degrees C, followed by cooling as above. The invention improves the mechanical properties of the iron, so it is esp. suitable for pistons and cylinders used in engines, pumps, compressors, etc. Nodular iron can be obtd. with mechanical properties similar to steel.
