Automatic testing of telephone network - has computer in one exchange instructing computer of second exchange to connect evaluator and signal generator to lines
A pair of telephone exchanges co-operate in testing each other's subscriber lines both locally and via the toll or long-distance lines in order to provide at each station a periodic record of line performance measured against a desired standard. In its simplest form, the computer of exchange I instructs the computer of exchange II connect a signal evaluator device to the incoming line as well as a test signal generator to the outgoing line. The evaluator classifies the return signal in terms of four performance levels, stores the result and also communicates the result to the paired distant exchange for logging purposes. For the testing of subscriber lines, a switch element is added in each subscriber set responsive to a scanning signal from the exchange computer in order temporarily to shunt the subscriber's appts.
