Filter to remove plankton from water stream involves pumping the water down a duct. Across the duct in convex profile to the direction of flow is stretched a filter medium of 10-20 mu pore size. This is on a roll and can be moved continuously or stepwise across the duct. An overlay of coarse mesh is laid on top of it. When it leaves on the other side of the duct it is sandwiched between two sheets of a transparent protective e.g. plastic sheet. The resulting band is then coiled onto a roll. The drives are interlinked so that all move at the correct speed. Used for measuring and monitoring the plankton content of fresh and sea waters. Arrangement allows the measurements to be made quickly and continuously so that the factors which control plankton growth can be studied.
