The air pump comprises a rotating housing (1) with pulley driven via a belt by a motor vehicle engine. The housing contains a housing mantle (2) and two end covers (3, 4) and rotates on a shaft (5) which carries a piston (12) and is held on a carrier member (7) through which a duct (24) communicates with the working chamber. The housing mantle itself acts as the pulley. The pump may be a trochoidal rotary piston pump with a three-edged piston in a two-lobed housing mantle. Two inlet ports (20) may be provided in the wall (16) of the cover (4) and connect (22) to the duct (24), whilst outlet ports (21) are arranged in the wall (15) of the other cover (3).
