A safety spring hook has a lift brake attached to the hook section. The brake clamps a rope between a braking component and a clamping piece mounted on it. The rope frictionally slides through the lift brake only when a clamping force determined by the clamping piece is exceeded. The position of the clamping piece on the braking component (21) is non-adjustable. The latter (21) is integral with the hook section (17). The spring hook is rapidly fixed to a rope, belt, or chain to prevent workmen engaged on high construction works from falling. Faulty adjustment of the lift brake-in which the rope is gripped either too weakly or too tightly- is avoided. The handling of the lift brake is straightforward so that the use should have no wish to change it from its set optimum position.
