New silyl cpds. of formula R1Si-X-R2 (I) or R2-X-SiR2 O-SiR2 -X-R2 (II) are new. In the formula X is O or NR6; R1 is cycloalkyl, aryloxy, 7-11C aralkyloxy, cycloalkyloxy or pref. 1-3C alkyl, 2-3C alkenyl, phenyl, 1-3C alkoxy, 2-3C alkenyloxy, methoxyethoxy or ethoxyethoxy; R2 is a gp. of formula R3-X-SiR21X m-R3-XH or: or if X is NR6, R2 and R6 together form part of a heterocyclic ring; m is 1-50, pref. 1-20; R3 is an opt. substd. phenylene or similar divalent aromatic gp.; R7 are H, 1-5C alkyl or together form a condensed carbocyclic ring; R8 is H, 1-5C alkyl, -OSi(R')3, -NR9Si(R')3 or various other substit. gps.; R9 is 1-5C alkyl, aryl or 7-11C aralkyl. Used for stabilisation of polymers against oxidative and/or thermal degradation, by release of amines and phenols which are effective oxidn. inhibitors, as a result of hydrolysis of the silyl cpds. by water diffused into the polymers. Silylation of the amino or phenolic gps. reduces polarity and gives better compatibility and dispersion in non-polar polymers, together with reduced vapour pressure and migration losses. Suppression of crosslinking of polyolefins and polyesters, esp. by peroxides. is also reduced by silylation.
