Stereophonic headphones have a pair of transducers (2, 3) mounted on a headband (1). Ear cushions (6, 7) form a sealed sound chamber (9, 10) with the transducer diaphragms (4, 5). A tube (8) interconnects the two sound chambers and has an adjustable constriction (11) by means of which it can successively and gradually be closed off. Coupling tubes (18) permit the longitudinal and rotational adjustment of the position of the earpieces. The interconnecting tube permits acoustic mixing of the sound from the two channels to obtain a more realistic effect. A double interconnecting tube may be employed as an alternative. In this case, one tube will be fitted with helium. Since the velocity of sound in this gas is greater than in air, the two tubes will have different time delays.
