An electric signal is applied to the noninverting input of a differential amplifier (26). Its magnitude depends on the current propagation times tripped by the laser pulses in a transmitter (10) and receiver (29), and on the actual propagation time of the laser pulse. A fixed value signal (27) is applied to the amplifier (26) inverting input, whose magnitude depends only on the current propagation times in the transmitter (10) and receiver (29), so that an amplifier (26) output delivers a signal depending only on the propagation time of the reflected light pulse.
