Novel tribromophenoxymethylene benzenes of formula (I): (m = 2-4; m+n = 6) are prepd. by reacting bromoethylated benzenes with tribromophenol in presence of base in acetone-toluene. (I) are flame-protectants for plastics. for thermoplastics, esp. high-density polyethylene, 1,2,4,5-tetramethyl-3,6-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxymethylene)benzen- e (Ia) and 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris(2,4,6-tribromophenoxymethylene)benzene (Ib) are pref. and are used at 2-10, esp. 3-5 wt. %. They are readily incorporated into the molten plastics without decompsn. and have no tendency to migrate.
