1314332 Removing sulphur dioxide from gas mixtures ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 15 May 1970 [28 May 1969] 27024/69 Headings B1L and B1R [Also in Divisions C1 C5 and F4] The SO 2 content of gases made from partial or complete combustion processes or derived from ore-roasting processes is reduced by contacting the gases with a hydrocarbon oil, e.g. fuel oils, distillates, catalytic fuel oils and mixtures thereof, at a temperature ranging from 400‹ to 800‹F. The gases may be bubbled through the oil, see Fig. 2 (not shown) or passed in countercurrent to a spray of the oil in an empty or packed vessel, see Fig. 3 (not shown). An alumina catalyst for promoting the reaction of SO 2 with H 2 S may be included in the oil in the embodiment of Fig. 2 or form the packing in the embodiment of Fig. 3, or be located in a separate vessel downstream of the gas and oil contacting vessel. Additional SO 2 - containing gas, e.g. a portion of the gas to be purified, may be combined with the treated gas, e.g. in the catalyst-containing vessel, to react wtih excess H 2 S. The purified gas may be contacted with a fluidised bed of an alkaline earth metal oxide or carbonate, see Fig. 5 (not shown) to remove traces of SO 2 .
