A detergent compsn. contg. is not 6% P and of pH 10 (1% aq. soln.) comprises (i) 2-75% organic anionic, nonionic, amphoteric and/or zwitterionic detergent(s), (ii) 4-50% (poly)carboxylate builder (I) of first carboxyl pKa 9, and (iii) 0.01-4% polyphosphonic acid (salt) (II). Pref. (I) has first pKa 2-8.5 and pref. has log Ca stability constant 2-7. Compsn. pref. has pH 6-9 (1% aq. soln.). Low phosphate compsn. has equivalent cleaning performance to conventional tripolyphosphate-built compsns. and have effective detergency and building performance based on lower than usual amts. of polycarboxylate builders. Compsn. has improved cleaning performance in the area of bleachable stain detergency.
