A magnetic sensor (26), palced on the vehicle's speedometer, feeds impulses to a circuit (12) which converts them to logic level pulses and feeds them to a counter (34) in which one impulse represents, say, 10 metres. The sequence control circuit (50) generates a clock function e.g. every 36 seconds, which is fed to a second counter (24), an impulse generator (30), which outputs the impulses contained in counter (34), a programmable frequency divider (14), and a digital display (22). The divider thus gives unit distance in unit time, giving a stored velocity, and thus mean speed over a given distance.
