A heat pump using a refrigerant such as Freon is used for the heating and cooling of a building. The refrigerant flows in the direction of the arrow (F) through the heat exchanger (1). Hot water from the heating system also flows in and out of the heat exchanger (1) and is controlled by the electro-magnetic valve (2). Water from the mains flows in the direction of the arrow (V) and out in the direction of the arrow (10). In winter the valve (2) is open and the refrigerant supplies heat to the central heating system (E) and to the mains water which is heated to a temperature of 50 deg.C. In summer time the valve (2) is closed and the mains water is used to cool the refrigerant so that the heat pump cools the building. Excess water is drained off through the valves (3, 4).
